Neighborhood 'Dick' Cat Gets Warning Letter From Angry Venice Resident (watch video first)

Cats may not always have the best reputation for being the friendliest, but one particular orange tabby kitty living in Venice Beach is getting a direct message from an angry neighbor.

Will Fleisher sent LAist this photo of a sign he saw while he was walking his dog on Speedway Avenue Thursday night. It was taped to a dumpster located at the back of the Cadillac Hotel and had a foreboding threat to the "dick" cat's owner.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio soliciting money for gubernatorial race (maybe)

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, probably the only county law official in the nation that most people know, sent an email to supporters today, asking for "$5, $25 or even $250" to support his possible bid for Arizona governor this year. The GOP primary is already super-crowded with wingnuts, and Arpaio's addition to the mix will only make the race even more entertaining.

Among others, the announced posse of pinheads already includes Secretary of State Ken Bennett, who early on pushed the birther nonsense; "Atomic" Al Melvin, a legislator who believes every problem can be solved by building nuclear plants and importing nuclear waste; former County Attorney Andrew Thomas, who was disbarred from practicing law for his role in building Arpaio's police state; and Christine Jones, an attorney for Go Daddy who clearly doesn't know Arizona geography and thinks Sheriff Arpaio "acts with integrity and honesty." There's more but it'll be a race to see who can out-crazy the others. If Arpaio enters the fray, the crazy bar just gets higher.

Measles outbreak in California growing -- 21 cases in one county

LOS ANGELES, March 27 (UPI) -- Orange County, California's third largest county behind Los Angeles and San Francisco, has 21 confirmed cases of measles, the highest cluster in the state, but the state has other outbreaks in Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Richard Sanchez, director of the Orange County Health Care Agency, said the entire state of California only had three cases of measles in the past five years. Currently, the state reported 35 cases of measles most likely brought to the area via travelers from Europe or the Philippines, two areas experiencing measles outbreaks.

Credit Card Breach at California DMV

The California Department of Motor Vehicles appears to have suffered a wide-ranging credit card data breach involving online payments for DMV-related services, according to banks in California and elsewhere that received alerts this week about compromised cards that all had been previously used online at the California DMV.

The alert, sent privately by MasterCard to financial institutions this week, did not name the breached entity but said the organization in question experienced a “card-not-present” breach — industry speak for transactions conducted online. The alert further stated that the date range of the potentially compromised transactions extended from Aug. 2, 2013 to Jan. 31, 2014, and that the data stolen included the card number, expiration date, and three-digit security code printed on the back of cards.

An open letter to the people who hate Obama more than they love America

I meet you all the time. You hate Obama. You hate gay people. You hate black people, immigrants, Muslims, labor unions, women who want the right to make choices concerning their bodies, you hate em all. You hate being called racist. You hate being called a bigot. Maybe if you talked about creating jobs more than you talk about why you hate gay people we wouldn't call you bigots. Maybe if you talked about black people without automatically assuming they are on food stamps while demanding their birth certificates we wouldn't call you racist. You hate socialism and social justice. You hate regulations and taxes and spending and the Government. You hate.

You like war. You like torture. You like Jesus. I don't know how in the hell any of that is compatible, but no one ever accused you haters of being over-committed to ideological consistency. You like people who look like you or at least hate most of the things that you hate. You hate everything else.

Now, I know you profess to love our country and the founding fathers (unless you are reminded that they believed in the separation of church and state), but I need to remind you that America is NOT what Fox News says it is. America is a melting pot, it always has been. We are a multi-cultural amalgamation of all kinds of people, and yet you still demonize everyone who is not a rich, white, heterosexual christian male or his submissive and obedient wife.

Well, here are the facts, Jack. If you hate the Government then you are unqualified to manage it. If you hate gay people more than you love America than you should take your own advice and get the hell out. There are several countries that are openly hostile to gay people, but they are full of brown people and you don't like them much either from what I understand. It looks like you are screwed, but that's not what I am here to tell you.

More rant below the fold . . .

SNAP !......Tea Party is an 'intellectual movement' says Michele Bachmann

Michele Bachmann (R-MN) issued her strong support for the Tea Party at the 2014 Conservative Political Action Conference.

At the CPAC podium, she said that the Tea Party movement is made up of high ideals, according to Raw Story.

“You see our movement at its core is an intellectual movement,” she said. “We are based on the greatest ideas ever conceived in the mind of man. And I would put those magnificent ideas up against any other idea for freedom in the world.”

Wishing They All Could Be California Hens

ATWATER, Calif. — Hens in California are living the good life. Many can now lay their eggs in oversize enclosures roomy enough to stand up, lie down — even extend their wings fully without touching another bird.

Hens in most other states don’t have it so good. Their conditions, as the head of California’s egg trade group explained, are “like you sitting in an airplane seat in the economy section all your life.”

So if you’re a hen, you want to live in California. Short of that, you want California-size leg room. And that’s precisely what lawmakers in California are demanding of out-of-state farmers who sell eggs in California — setting off a feud over interstate commerce that has spilled over into the farmyard at large.

The Missouri attorney general has filed a lawsuit to block the California egg rules, and at least three other states are considering doing the same. The beef and pork lobbies are also lining up against the California rules in an effort to prevent any new restrictions on raising livestock.

California voters set new standards for hen housing in 2008 when they approved a ballot measure that imposed more generous living conditions for egg layers in their state. When producers complained that the measure created a competitive disadvantage, the Legislature tacked on a law that mandated imported eggs be produced under the same standards.

California Driver’s License Program Hits an Unexpected Hurdle

Last year, when California became the most populous state to pass a law permitting undocumented residents to obtain driver’s licenses, advocates for immigrant rights were thrilled, saying it would allow people to commute without fear while also decreasing rates of hit-and-run accidents and uninsured drivers on the roads. Now those advocates are confronting another formidable obstacle: the deep and longstanding mistrust of the American government among this population.

It turns out that persuading immigrants who have spent decades avoiding the authorities to willingly hand over their names, addresses and photographs to the government is no easy sell — particularly since the licenses will look different from regular ones, in ways that have yet to be determined.

“I believe this license process is not secure,” one woman, who declined to identify herself, told state officials at an informational hearing here hosted by the Department of Motor Vehicles. “Is this a trap?”

“It’s not a trap,” said Ricardo Lara, the state senator who represents this working-class city, where more than 40 percent of the population is foreign born. State law guaranteed that their information would not be shared with other government agencies, like Immigration and Customs Enforcement, he said, adding, “Your information is protected.”

What this really shows is how out of touch and idealistic Congress and conservtaives have become. If it was not for the impractical blocking of "path to citizenship" policy and clinging to a futile policy of hit-and-miss mass deportation motivated by idealistic conceptions of fairness, this problem would be much easier to tackle. States like CA and NV have to pragmatically deal with the problem of numerous unlicensed, uninusured and untested drivers on the road. Debating whether it's fair to provide services and driving priveleges to people who allegedly "cut in line" and pursuing futile policies because "it's the right thing to do," doesn't make our roads safer (nor will it reduce waiting times in ERs to touch on another related issue). Best for Congress and the supposedly true blue conservatives blocking immigration reform to embraced that most American of philosophies: pragmatism. 12 million people are here, wrong or not, and need to be incorporated into the formal ecnomy/society - otherwise we all pay for the luxury of idealism.

Ordinary American USA 36 minutes ago
The real idealism is the belief that handing our citizenship to millions of unskilled foreigners will be a good thing for most Americans. We had an amnesty in 1986. The net result was stagnant wages and rising income inequality. We don't need another one. We need to tell our neighbors to the south that the responsibility for their least able citizens lies with them not us.

What is starting to make me even angrier than I already am about the dismal situation our country is in right now, is that the focus of so many of the elected is how they can aid and assist illegal immigrants. They refuse to take any kind of significant action to address unemployment, the basic needs of the poor, our horrendous educational system, the list goes depressingly on and on. But, every other day you read about how some state, federal, whatever is fighting for the rights of people that entered the United States illegally. And I am tired of it. As a lifelong liberal, I am very tired of it. Who the heck represents American citizens anymore? Democrats, Republicans, no one seems to give a fig about helping stop the downfall of our country and the future of our children and grandchildren. If this isn't a perfect example of what's wrong with politics and politicians, I don't know what is.

Kentucky GOP leader pushes for twin Paul 2016 presidential, Senate bids

Washington (CNN) – A top Kentucky legislative leader allied with GOP Sen. Rand Paul is pushing for changes to that state's law that would allow the libertarian leaning lawmaker to simultaneously seek both the presidency and re-election to his Senate seat in 2016.

Kentucky's Republican state Senate Majority Leader, Damon Thayer, may file legislation by Thursday that would clarify state law in order to ensure Paul can seek both offices at the same time.

Bill Maher's controversial New Rule on seniors (literally) screwing us over

Bill Maher closed his show with a New Rule that's probably going to generate some controversy here about senior citizens.

And finally, New Rule: In the battle for government giveaways, we have to stop thinking in terms of rich versus poor, or black versus white, and admit it's really a war between the young and the old. And the old are winning. When it comes to meeting the needs of our seniors, money is no object. Last month, for example, an Inspector General's report revealed that between 2006-11, Medicare spent over $172 million dollars of taxpayer money on penis pumps. Because nobody wants to get all worked up only to go limp when the big moment arrives. Just ask the Denver Broncos. (audience laughter and applause)
You know, in America, we talk a lot about entitlements, and who are the takers and who are the makers, and here's the bottom line from the current issue of Harper's.

Federal yearly spending per child: $3,822.
Federal yearly spending per senior: $25,455.

Seniors keep asking, what kind of world are we leaving for our grandkids? Well, one where Head Start, nutrition assistance, and child welfare are being cut. These days, when Grandpa finds a quarter behind your ear, he keeps it. (audience laughter and applause)

Meanwhile, 5% of our entire budget is spent on people in just their last year of life — a third of that on just the last month. Which I'm OK with. Look, dying is hard, and I wanna do it on drugs. The best drugs you got. Drugs so good, they will make me think I've wasted my whole life doing the drugs I'm on now. (audience laughter)

But let's not kid ourselves where our tax dollar goes. It goes to Grandma, because she votes, and young people don't. And that's why when seniors say "Jump", Uncle Sam says, "How about a free penis pump?"

Now you may be asking, what exactly is a penis pump? And the answer is, it's basically a vacuum device, which begs the question, why not just use the vacuum cleaner? (audience laughter) Well, because then you can't hear The Price Is Right. (audience laughter and applause)

OK, I make that joke because there is something you have to know about this issue. Respectable news sources report that there is a phenomenon occurring where people in nursing homes are now fucking like rabbits on an adjustable bed. And we know this because the Centers for Disease Control reports that syphilis and chlamydia in seniors has nearly tripled over the past decade. (grossed out audience reaction and laughter) Apparently, 70 is the new 69. (wild audience laughter and cheering)

And the old folks' home is the new freshman dorm. These days, when Grandma yells, "Bingo!", it's because an old vet just found her G-spot. (grossed out audience laughter) It's true! The face of American sex used to be a young virile sexual athlete like Bruce Jenner, and now it's an old woman like Bruce Jenner. (audience laughter and applause)

And you know what? I say great! No country in the world disrespects the elderly more than this one. The least we can do is let them go out with a bang. As long as they don't mix up the Astroglide with the PoliGrip... (grossed out audience reaction) I'm all for it!

But what's with all the STDs? College-age Americans use condoms 40% of the time. People over 61 — only 6% of the time. And they also say spermicide is too "spicy". (grossed out audience laughter)

But here's what I don't understand. Why, if seniors are having all this government subsidized fun, why are they the angriest people politically? And they are. 76% of seniors say they're "dissatisfied" with the way things are going in the country today. Why? You're getting all the money and half the pussy! (audience laughter)

But polls repeatedly show that seniors are the most opposed to Obamacare. Because Obamacare is government paying for health care. We can't have any of that in America. Of course, one reason seniors can afford to be so cavalier about all this VD they're getting is cuz they know the government will pay for curing it! Just like the government paid for the boner pills and the penis pumps in the first place!

So stop your bellyaching. Cuz you're lucky you get to live in a country that'll keep you hard until you're stiff. (wild audience laughter and cheering)

What does Arizona SB 1062 say about the Republican Party?.

Since losing the 2012 presidential election, the GOP attempted to repair the damage the far-right wing of their party had caused. Even casual political observers saw Mitt Romney’s judgment against 47 percent of Americans as inferior lazy takers as crude and unacceptable.

But instead of repairing the damage caused by extremist candidates, the Republican Party has moved full speed ahead with legislation that reinforces their Aryan race-type vision.

Since then, Republicans with complete control of state houses and governorships have turned the government into an invasive instrument of Big Brother policies that have turned freedom into something Americans have to fight for, rather than enjoy.
Women have lost their constitutional right to access abortion in dozens of states through new restrictive laws. Voting rights have been crushed with voter ID laws that have so many obstacles to obtaining the required ID, it effectively stops them from voting.

The tea party wing of the GOP has moved so far to the right, it could easily be called a fascist movement. American gun owners now have more rights to kill than other Americans have to survive. The working poor are portrayed as a problem to be cut off rather than uplifted. Judgment is passed on social status and wealth, with the rich deeming themselves more worthy. Community spirit has been replaced by self-serving ambition and political correctness has been invalidated.

In addition to limiting free choice, unprecedented obstructionism shows how tenaciously determined Republican radicals are to dismantle the US government from within.

Supporters of “religious freedom” legislation have sent a subtle but unmistakable message that permeates the new Republican-right. The only religion they appear to be defending is Christianity. What does that mean for the millions of Americans who are not Christians? Or practice no religion at all?

Idaho: Film Document of Animal Abuse Is Banned

Gov. C. L. (Butch) Otter on Friday signed a bill threatening anyone who secretly films animal abuse at agricultural facilities with a year in jail and a $5,000 fine. Mr. Otter, a rancher, said the measure promoted by the dairy industry “is about agriculture producers being secure in their property and their livelihood.” The bill came in response to videos released by the vegetarian and animal rights group Mercy for Animals showing workers at Bettencourt Dairy beating, stomping and sexually abusing cows in 2012.
