Obamacare 'Glitch' Allows Some Families To Be Priced Out Of Health Insurance

Obamacare 'Glitch' Allows Some Families To Be Priced Out Of Health Insurance

Some families could get priced out of health insurance due to what's being called a glitch in President Barack Obama's overhaul law. IRS regulations issued Wednesday failed to fix the problem as liberal backers of the president's plan had hoped.

As a result, some families that can't afford the employer coverage that they are offered on the job will not be able to get financial assistance from the government to buy private health insurance on their own. How many people will be affected is unclear.

The Obama administration says its hands were tied by the way Congress wrote the law. Officials said the administration tried to mitigate the impact. Families that can't get coverage because of the glitch will not face a tax penalty for remaining uninsured, the IRS rules said.

'Checkout Fees' Take Effect, Allowing Retailers To Add 4-Percent Surcharge

Jan 28 (Reuters) - Retailers in 40 U.S. states can now charge up to 4 percent extra when consumers pay for goods and services with a credit card.

These so-called "checkout fees" went into effect Jan. 27, and do not apply to debit card payments. The fees are illegal in California, New York, Texas and seven other states.

It is up to individual businesses to decide whether or not to add the fee. They also need to disclose it to consumers.

Mississippi 'Nullification' Panel Pushed By Tea Party Legislators Would Negate Federal Laws

Two Tea Party lawmakers in Mississippi have proposed legislation to create a permanent committee charged with nullifying federal laws the state does not want to follow.

Under the legislation, a committee of 14 state lawmakers would be authorized to stop any federal law from applying in Mississippi, the Dispatch reports. The bill comes as state lawmakers around the country have sought to block enforcement of President Barack Obama's new executive orders related to gun control, often in ways that have been called constitutionally questionable.

Smoked Salmon And Bagel Recall Involves Whole Foods, Thomas', Sara Lee, Publix And Weight Watchers

Bagels and lox are a much-loved breakfast combo, which is why it's particularly odd -- and alarming -- that two separate recalls were recently initiated for Whole Foods smoked salmon and bagels from Thomas', Sara Lee, Publix and Weight Watchers in some states.

The cold smoked and sliced salmon, sold in four-ounce packages at a slew of Whole Foods stores, has been recalled for potential Listeria bacteria contamination. Affected states are Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Utah.

The FDA has more details about the product's packaging:
The recalled salmon is sold in black-and-gold, flat, rectangular vacuum-sealed packages; the lot code being recalled is 7425A2298B. The lot code is ink-jet printed on the back of the package, on the upper left side. The UPC code is 0 99482 40880 0. Signage is posted in Whole Foods Market stores to notify customers of this recall. Pictures of the product are enclosed.

Ground Beef Recall: 16 People Sick From Salmonella In 5 States

Ground Beef Recall: 16 People Sick From Salmonella In 5 States

NEW YORK — Federal health officials say at least 16 people in five states have been sickened by salmonella food poisoning linked to ground beef.

No one has died, but half were hospitalized. Most of the illnesses have been in Michigan, but a few cases were scattered in Arizona, Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin.

Seven people ate a raw ground beef dish called kibbeh (kib-BEH') last month at a suburban Detroit restaurant that wasn't identified. Health officials say consumers should not eat uncooked meat.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said the cases have been linked to last week's recall of more than 1,000 pounds of ground beef from two Michigan businesses, Troy-based Gab Halal Foods and Sterling Heights-based Jouni Meats.

GOP Rep Says He Opposes Immigration Reform Because Latinos Are Uneducated, Will Never Support Republicans | ThinkProgress

Republican senators in the so-called Gang of 8 working to enact comprehensive immigration reform with a path to citizenship argue that repairing the broken system would attract Latino voters to the GOP. As Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) explained during a Sunday appearance on ABC’s This Week, “We are losing dramatically the Hispanic vote, which we think should be ours for a variety of reasons, and we’ve got to understand that.” In November, President Obama “won 71 percent of the Hispanic vote while Mitt Romney won 27 percent.”

But some Republicans disagree. Responding to the bipartisan framework, Rep. Lou Barletta (R-PA) echoed the rhetoric surrounding immigrants and Democratic voters throughout the 2012 election and suggested that Hispanics would never vote for Republicans who don’t provide them with government hand outs:
“It’s amnesty that America can’t afford,” Barletta said Monday. “We have to stop people from coming in illegally. This will be a green light for anyone who wants to come to America illegally and then be granted citizenship one day.” [...]
“I hope politics is not at the root of why we’re rushing to pass a bill. Anyone who believes that they’re going to win over the Latino vote is grossly mistaken,” Barletta said. “The majority that are here illegally are low-skilled or may not even have a high school diploma. The Republican Party is not going to compete over who can give more social programs out. They will become Democrats because of the social programs they’ll depend on.”

WTF....Selling a New Generation on Guns - NYTimes.com

Selling a New Generation on Guns - NYTimes.com

The industry’s youth-marketing effort is backed by extensive social research and is carried out by an array of nonprofit groups financed by the gun industry, an examination by The New York Times found. The campaign picked up steam about five years ago with the completion of a major study that urged a stronger emphasis on the “recruitment and retention” of new hunters and target shooters.

The overall objective was summed up in another study, commissioned last year by the shooting sports industry, that suggested encouraging children experienced in firearms to recruit other young people.

The report, which focused on children ages 8 to 17, said these “peer ambassadors” should help introduce wary youngsters to guns slowly, perhaps through paintball, archery or some other less intimidating activity.

“The point should be to get newcomers started shooting something, with the natural next step being a move toward actual firearms,” said the report, which was prepared for the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Hunting Heritage Trust.

The N.R.A. has for decades given grants for youth shooting programs, mostly to Boy Scout councils and 4-H groups, which traditionally involved single-shot rimfire rifles, BB guns and archery. Its $21 million in total grants in 2010 was nearly double what it gave out five years earlier.

Newer initiatives by other organizations go further, seeking to introduce children to high-powered rifles and handguns while invoking the same rationale of those older, more traditional programs: that firearms can teach “life skills” like responsibility, ethics and citizenship. And the gun industry points to injury statistics that it says show a greater likelihood of getting hurt cheerleading or playing softball than using firearms for fun and sport.

Arizona Latino media outlets unite to create special program on immigration law

Arizona Latino media outlets unite to create special program on immigration law
Latino media outlets in Arizona are interrupting their regularly-scheduled programming on Wednesday to join forces in a special broadcast called “Hoy Somos Arizona.” According to its organizers, the commercial-free, half-hour broadcast will inform viewers on the looming Supreme Court decision on Arizona’s SB1070 immigration law, which is expected in the next few days.

“Latino media in Arizona have been on the front lines of this struggle covering this controversial law since it was first introduced in the Arizona State legislature,” said Ben Monterroso, national executive director of Mi Familia Vota Education Fund.

“With this program they have taken the steps necessary to unite the community and empower individuals with the information they need to defend their rights and take control of their own destinies,” he added.

The program will also include a toll-free hotline staffed by bilingual civil rights attorneys and volunteers, as well as information on voter registration. Telemundo, Univision and Azteca America TV anchors will jointly present the program.

The show will air today from 5pm to 5:30pm Mountain time on Latino television and radio outlets and will also be streamed over the internet.

Arizona legislator proposes hospitals check citizenship status

Arizona legislator proposes hospitals check citizenship status
A legislator in Arizona has introduced a bill which would require hospital workers to ask patients with no insurance whether they are in this country legally. Maricopa County Republican legislator Steve Smith introduced HB 2293, saying this would be a way to try to find out how much money is spent on undocumented immigrants.

“I get asked from constituents all the time,” Smith said. “How much money does Arizona spend on free services for illegal aliens? And the answer is, we have no clue.”

Apart from asking an uninsured person if they are legal, the bill would ask the hospital worker to call the police if he or she suspects the patient is undocumented.

Senator Joe Manchin III invited a group of 15 businessmen and community leaders to lunch last week to discuss the topic, he had only a vague idea of how anxious many of his supporters were.

“How many of you all believe that there is a movement to take away the Second Amendment?” he asked.

About half the hands in the room went up.

Despite his best attempts to reassure them — “I see no movement, no talk, no bills, no nothing” — they remained skeptical. “We give up our rights one piece at a time,” a banker named Charlie Houck told the senator.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta is lifting the military’s ban on women in combat, which will open up hundreds of thousands of additional front-line jobs to them, senior defense officials said on Wednesday.

The groundbreaking decision overturns a 1994 Pentagon rule that restricts women from artillery, armor, infantry and other such combat roles, even though in reality women have found themselves in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan, where more than 20,000 have served. As of last year, more than 800 women had been wounded in the two wars and more than 130 had died.

Sheriff's officials in the Atlanta area are investigating whether any laws were broken when fliers inviting residents to join the Ku Klux Klan were placed outside homes.

Newton County sheriff's Deputy Courtney Morrison says the fliers are being reviewed to make sure they don't contain any inappropriate information or threats.

The Newton Citizen reports that the fliers included a drawing of a robed klansman standing in front of a tree with writing that said, "Join the KKK – Loyal White Knights."

CBS Atlanta reports that police collected more than 30 of the fliers that were folded and packed into plastic sandwich bags and tossed at the end of driveways in the Covington area.

Covington is about 35 miles southeast of Atlanta.

Arizona bill would require loyalty oath for graduation - Phoenix News - KTAR.com
PHOENIX -- Republican lawmakers have introduced a bill that would require high school seniors to recite a loyalty oath before they graduate. House Bill 2467 would make the oath an additional prerequisite for graduation from any public high school in Arizona.

Before graduating, students would be required to recite this oath to their principal:
"I, _____, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose or evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge these duties; so help me God."
If passed, HB 2467 would take effect starting in the 2013-14 school year, but there could be legal challenges if the bill is approved.

Can You Spot The Error ?

Canada $20 Bill Uses Wrong Maple Leaf Emblem, Botanist Says

The Bank of Canada has barked up the wrong maple tree with its new plastic banknotes, using a foreign Norway maple leaf as the emblem on the notes instead of the sugar maple that the country has on its national flag, an eagle-eyed Canadian botanist says.

The untrained eye might not at first spot the difference between the maple leaf on the new $20, $50 and $100 bills and the North American sugar maple.

But it is clear to Sean Blaney, a botanist who tracks plants for the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre in New Brunswick, and who brought it first to the attention of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Companies donate security technology to Newtown
"It was hard for us to realize what was happening," Marino said. In an effort to provide some peace of mind to Sandy Hook students, staff and parents, he decided to reach out to about a dozen security manufacturers and ask whether they'd donate equipment if his father's company contributed the labor to install it at the new school in Monroe.

"Nobody said no," he said.

Marino said he has since collected hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of equipment and other services. It's been enough to outfit the Monroe school with technology ranging from an intrusion detection system to a panic alarm, as well as to fully equip Newtown's five other schools.

Arizona's cleaning house...illegals, mexicans and now the unemployed

Jan Brewer Wants Drug Tests In Arizona Job Training Programs
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer (R) wants enrollees in the state's job-training programs to prove they're not on drugs.

A recent executive order creating a "Workforce Arizona Council" designed to review the state's job-training efforts calls for the board to "adopt policies that will require persons enrolling in a taxpayer-funded job training program to be drug-tested."

Brewer's office did not respond to a request for more information about her order Wednesday.

Two other states have recently had job trainees pee in cups to prove they're living clean. In each state, the test results suggested unemployed workers in job training actually live a lot cleaner than most people; less than 1 percent of jobseekers had used drugs.

ACLU: Philadelphia cops wrongly arrest videotapers
The American Civil Liberties Union alleges that Philadelphia police have a pattern of wrongfully arresting people who videotape officers in public.

The group filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of a college student who used his cellphone to document police arresting several teens downtown.

Temple University student Chris Montgomery was charged with disorderly conduct after recording the arrests in 2011. The complaint says police detained him and erased the video from his phone.

ACLU attorney Mary Catherine Roper says the lawsuit seeks to confirm the public's First Amendment right to record law enforcement officers.

She says it's the first of several complaints the ACLU plans to file alleging wrongful arrests.

So much for the debt ceiling! House GOP raises budget to defend DOMA — MSNBC
House Republicans, who have repeatedly threatened to not raise the debt ceiling, quietly raised their budgetary allowance to defend the anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act in federal court.

In a newly revised legal contract obtained by The Huffington Post, the House of Representatives and its law firm, Bancroft LLC, signed on to raise the spending ceiling up to $3 million.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer wrote in a joint letter. ”With Republicans willing to take our economy and our country to the brink of default in the name of deficit reduction, there is simply no excuse for any Member of Congress to commit taxpayer dollars to an unnecessary–and futile–legal battle.”

House approves Hurricane Sandy relief package - The Washington Post
The House on Tuesday approved $50 billion in relief for victims of Hurricane Sandy, a package designed to speed aid to devastated communities in New York and New Jersey, and a vote that provided an early test of the resolve of Republican deficit hawks.

The package was adopted on a 241 to 80 vote, on the strength of support from Democrats, as well as 49 Republicans, who mostly hail from communities hit hard by the Oct. 29, 2012, storm.

It overcame a tough challenge from fiscal conservatives who believed the emergency spending should be offset with spending cuts in other parts of the federal budget to avoid adding to the federal debt.

Most Republicans — 179 in all — opposed the final package, an outcome that would have once been unthinkable in the GOP-led chamber.

Tony Cardenas' hands were chilled from the frozen turkeys he'd been handing out, but he hardly seemed to notice, so busy was he greeting constituents at his annual food giveaway for the needy.

This would be the last holiday he would conduct the event as a Los Angeles City councilman.

He handily won election to Congress on Nov. 6 in a district drawn last year to reflect the area's surging Latino population. He takes office Jan. 3.

Cardenas, 49, said he'd keep up the charity — a reminder of his own roots as the child of poor, hard-working immigrants from Mexico.

When people step forward as their bags of food are loaded, assembly-line style, "I see me; I see my family when I was growing up," he said. "I see my district."

Cardenas is going to Washington at a time when Latinos are increasingly viewed as important voters and their ranks in Congress have grown, and he cites immigration reform as one of his priorities.

Paranoid Freaks !

Gun mania - latimes.com

Happy days are here again for the makers and sellers of guns and ammunition, and why not? There's nothing like a good school massacre to really move those Mausers off the shelves. The timing of the Newtown, Conn., atrocity, moreover, couldn't have been better, coming as it did just two weeks before Christmas, when gun enthusiasts slumber with visions of high-capacity magazines dancing in their heads.

Gun and ammunition sales tend to leap in the wake of high-profile mass shootings. National elections can have the same effect; the 2008 election of Barack Obama as president prompted a run on firearms and bullets that caused prices to skyrocket.

The reason for all this gun mania, of course, is fear — not fear of victimization, but fear that the government will impose limits on gun ownership. President Obama is the focus of this fear, as he has been since 2008, despite the fact that he has neither proposed nor signed anti-gun legislation. "I'll tell you right now, Obama is the No. 1 gun salesman in the nation," a gun shopper named Ryan Girard told Mather.

Shameless

Hank Greenberg didn’t get to where he is today by being timid. The former chairman of AIG built the company up from humble beginnings in the 1960s to become the world’s largest insurance company, before a 2005 accounting scandal forced Greenberg to step down. But he remained a major shareholder through the U.S. government’s 2008 bailout of the company, when the feds took an 80% stake in the firm in exchange for an $85 billion loan, which saved the company from certain bankruptcy. (The bailout eventually ballooned to $182 billion loan in exchange for a 92% stake.)

But Greenberg isn’t thankful for the rescue. In fact, he thinks we the taxpayers ripped him off in the deal, and he will meet with AIG’s board today in an attempt to convince the company to join his company, Starr International, in a law suit against the federal government, according to a report yesterday in The New York Times.

Outrage after taco restaurant gives employees “How to Catch an Illegal Immigrant” t-shirts#.UOx4ciQbbJI.twitter#.UOx4ciQbbJI.twitter

Taco Cid, a South Carolina Mexican eatery, has caused controversy after encouraging employees to wear “How to Catch an Illegal Immigrant” t-shirts. The shirt features a box trap with a stick and two tacos meant to lure undocumented immigrants. Latino organizations have responded calling the shirts offensive.

“Of course it’s offensive, it’s meant to be,” says Lisa Navarette, advisor to the president at the National Council of La Raza. “This is simply a failing business trolling for attention. We would recommend people not patronize this place. Sure, because of this insult but really due to the fact that a restaurant this clueless about the Latino community can’t possibly make a decent taco.”

Navarette’s reference to Taco Cid as a failed business, likely comes because it is the only remaining
Taco Cid in South Carolina. The rest have been closed. It is also a one-star restaurant on Yelp.com, but most of the reviews have come after this controversy unfolded.

Pelosi favors use of 14th Amendment to avoid debt-ceiling crisis - The Hill
Many leading Democrats have urged Obama to avoid a fight with congressional Republicans over the debt ceiling by invoking the 14th Amendment. It states that the “the validity of the public debt … shall not be questioned." Supporters of that strategy argue that the language empowers the president to raise the debt ceiling without congressional input.

Obama this week said he won't entertain any options but a clean debt-ceiling vote.

“While I will negotiate over many things," he said late Tuesday night, "I will not have another debate with this Congress over whether or not they should pay the bills that they’ve already racked up through the laws that they passed.”

Republicans are pushing back hard. They see the debt-ceiling increase as perhaps their greatest leverage point in forcing Obama to accept steep spending cuts amid the looming budget battles set to define the early stages of the 113th Congress.

Steve King Introduces Bill To Stop 'Anchor Babies'
It's the first week of the 113th Congress, and one House member is already trying to stop children born in the United States to undocumented parents -- whom he calls "anchor babies" -- from gaining citizenship.

Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), an outspoken hardliner on immigration, introduced a bill on Thursday that would "clarify those classes of individuals born in the United States who are nationals and citizens of the United States at birth." The Supreme Court has consistently held that anyone born in the United States, regardless of their parents' immigration status, should receive citizenship under the 14th Amendment.

Kevin Prince Boateng Walks Off Field: Is FIFA Facing a Player Revolt Against Racism? | TIME.com
The player walk-off led by AC Milan’s Ghana midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng last week to protest racist abuse during a friendly match against a lower-tier Italian club could mark the beginning of a player revolt against the ineffective anti-racism efforts by soccer‘s international administrators. Until now, players have been required, under threat of cards and suspensions, to take no action in response to racist abuse from the crowd, but instead to leave it the issue to the referee and match officials. But the efforts by FIFA and its affiliates — wrist-slap fines imposed on teams and national federations whose fans have transgressed being the strongest sanction used thus far – haven’t stopped the abuse. Boateng’s action was a defiant rebuke, not only to the racists in the crowd, but to the officialdom that has failed to effectively tackle the problem. If walking off becomes a trend, which it threatens to do, it will present a profound crisis for the game’s administrators.

Poor Boehner....he won

John Boehner, House Speaker, To Retain Position After Vote
Speaker of the House John Boehner (R-Ohio) has retained his top leadership position in the U.S. House of Representatives after a vote by the new congress.

Boehner was not challenged for the position, but there was skepticism he may lose the spot after the heated fiscal cliff battle that culminated in a New Year's Day deal.

Of 426 votes cast on Tuesday, Boehner received 220. Others who received votes for the speakership include Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.) and former Comptroller General David Walker.
