Arizona eyes special license plate for 'tea party'
A bill advancing in the Arizona Legislature would give "tea party" supporters their own license plate but without taxpayer-provided startup costs that supporters wanted.
But some of the proceeds of eventual sales of the "Don't Tread On Me" special plate would still go into a fund that a state committee would use to promote tea-party principles.
The Republican-led Senate Committee of the Whole gave Senate Bill 1402 preliminary approval Thursday after deleting a provision to have the state highway fund front $32,000 of startup costs after critics, including tea-party supporters, objected.
