The chairman of an Arizona Senate committee has scheduled a hearing on his bill to repeal the state’s Medicaid program, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System.
Republican Sen. Andy Biggs of Gilbert has included his repeal bill on a crowded agenda for what is expected to be a lengthy meeting Tuesday.
Biggs is among majority Republicans who bemoan the financial burden that the Medicaid program places on the state.
However, some of those same Republicans say it’s unrealistic to eliminate the entire program because Arizona would lose federal funding for people who would still need health care.
Gov. Jan Brewer has proposed suspending coverage for approximately 280,000 adults, The federal government says the state has leeway to drop 250,000 next fall when the program is up for routine renewal.
