Weird: 2,000 Birds, 100,000 Fish Inexplicably Turn Up Dead in Arkansas AlterNet

Has 2011 brought the start of the apocalypse or what? It seems that way in Arkansas at least, where thousands of animals have inexplicably turned up dead.

First, on New Year's Eve, some 2,000 red-winged blackbirds fell out of the sky for no discernible reason. Over the weekend, officials speculated that the birds' death could have been caused by lightning, high-altitude hail or New Year's fireworks.

But the plot thickens. Now it's being reported that an estimated 100,000 fish have also perished in the state. CBS News:

The drum fish were discovered Thursday across more than 20 miles of the [Arkansas] river, fish and game officials announced Sunday.

Officials said they don't know what killed the fish, but that contaminated water isn't likely to be the cause because only one species was affected.

The fish kill took place only 125 miles from the site of the mysterious falling birds.

Arkansas, what gives?
