MetroCenter Mall Passes on Sheriff's Posse
PHOENIX - The Maricopa County Sheriff's Posse hit the malls Friday to protect shoppers to and from the parking lots -- but one mall said 'thanks, but no thanks' this year.
MetroCenter Mall off I-17 and Peoria decided to pass on the sheriff's posse, but haven't said why. But some are speculating it has to do with Sheriff Arpaio's controversial policies, policies that have angered many people in the Hispanic community.
The sheriff's volunteer posse first started patrolling MetroCenter Mall during the holidays in 1993 -- a tradition that came to an end this year. In April, MetroCenter's mall got new ownership.
The sheriff says he's disappointed by the mall's refusal of the posse's help.
"Most people appreciated our presence," says Sheriff Joe.
