Held hostage by conflicting interests
Many may recall the 1960 television documentary "Harvest of Shame." The work of legendary newscaster Edward R. Murrow, the program drew attention to the plight of the migrant workers perhaps best summed up by a quote from a Southern farmer: "We used to own our slaves; now we just rent them."
